Mace Francis

Mace Francis Orchestra

I formed MFO in late 2004 to experiment with big band composition after graduating from university. I had been influenced by the great modern big bands lead by Bob Brookmeyer, Thad Jones, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider but formed a band which was smaller than the standard big band line-up, as I wanted to have a band of musicians who really wanted to be there rather than just filling seats. The result was a 12-piece ensemble which grew to 13 a few years later.

Since our first gig in April 2005 at the Lazy Susan Lounge we have been active as an ensemble performing, touring and recording regularly. Highlights for the band so far have been; 4 national tours (2006, 2008, 2010 & 2011), performances with international jazz artists, Jim Pugh (USA), Jon Gordon (NY), John Hollenbeck (GER/NY), Satoko Fujii (JAP), Natsuki Tamura (JAP), Theo Bleckmann (NY) and Ed Partyka (Austria), 7 CD recordings and commissioning over 30 new compositions through the Chinese Whispers collaborative project.

This band is so much fun to lead. All the guys and gals that have been in the band over the years have all been or become really good friends. I have learnt so much from everyone and had almost too much fun. Always looking forward to the next project.
